This impressive arcaded square has been the setting for Madrid since Philip II made it the seat of the Court in 1561. Originally it had various uses: theatrical performances, civic center, market, bullring, etc. The Casa de la Panadería and the Casa de la Carnicería stand out in their composition, the only buildings flanked by towers.

As a curiosity, the owners of houses in the square, had the commitment to rent the balconies in the festivities, full of courtiers. In the center, the great equestrian statue of Felipe III, the work of the sculptor Juan de Bolonia and Pietro Tacca, from 1614.
